What are they?

Adobe® Acrobat® and Adobe Reader are separate programs which let you open and view documents created in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF).

Adobe Acrobat lets you create PDF documents, add bookmarks and comments, change security settings, and edit PDF documents in other ways. Documents from other programs such as word processors can be converted to PDF, retaining their original layout, fonts and images.

Adobe Reader (previously called Acrobat Reader) is free software that lets you open and view any PDF document, either within the Adobe program, or embedded within your web browser.

Installing Adobe Reader

You may already have the Adobe Reader installed. If not, get your copy of the free Adobe Reader and installation instructions at: www.adobe.com

Problems with viewing PDF files

If the Adobe PDF files do not display within your web browser as expected, try updating to the latest version of Adobe Reader using the link above.

Alternatively, you may wish to follow the method outlined below for opening PDF files outside of your web browser, within the Adobe program itself.

You will first need to open the Adobe program:

  • for PC (Windows) users:
from the Start button - choose Programs and then locate the Adobe Acrobat or Reader program installed on your computer

  • for Macintosh users:
OSX - Finder > Applications > Adobe Acrobat (or Reader)
OS9.X - Apple Menu > Applications > Adobe Acrobat (or Reader)

Please select your version of the Adobe program from the list below, to jump to the correct instructions on this page.
